No searchers came near their hiding place that day, but the rotor-blade vehicles swept the area repeatedly. While he didn’t think they’d be spotted in the dense foliage he did not take any chances, keeping a firm grip on the greenie each time one of the machines roared overhead. There was no question they’d need to move after dark.

In the meantime, the toe that the greenie bit itched and began to swell. Kwap was not going to wait until he became deathly ill again, and as soon as it became apparent he had another parasite infestation he woke Tirrsill and had her put their remaining healer on the wound.

“I wondered how you two survived here,” Coro-er remarked. “Griffins usually die without the monsters treating them.”

“We had three healers. This is the only one left.” Kwap said.

“The parasites kill them too. The monsters had to make sure the parasites that killed the griffins and hanz also killed the healers. If a griffin with this parasite tries to use a healer, they’ll both die.”

Kwap remembered how ill he was during the first few days there. He survived, but the healers paid with their lives. Now the monsters were making sure both would die. He glanced down at their remaining healer. If they used water from containers without the chemical smell the creature seemed to do okay. It still had a grayish pallor and was not as lively as usual, but it was alive. Maybe its system adapted to the alien parasites the same way his and Tirrsill’s seemed to do.

Coro-er did okay as long as she was distracted, but as soon as she was left to her own devices she returned to rocking and muttering. She pulled out growing feather shafts and plucked at the remaining fluffy down, determined to remove every last piece of covering from her body. Kwap knew that stressed greenies pulled their own plumage, but he’d never seen anything this extreme before. According to Tirrsill all the greenies were in varying stages of feather loss, and some were much worse off than Coro-er. Kwap didn’t want to think about what they must look like.

Kwap spent the afternoon resting on a heavy branch, watching the local birds and flying insects while keeping an eye on Coro-er. He needed to get through the gate as soon as possible. It would take time to organize a war flock and plan an assault. The only thing that would completely destroy that building was explosives, which meant the war flock would need to find some specialists. There were hanz who knew how to use explosives—generally for mining or construction—but it was not a common skill. But first, all he needed was a way to get into the gate building, past all the monsters and greenies inside, through the door leading to the gate, then make his way past the wolfen guards on the other side, and somehow make the flight to Crossline Plains without being shot down or attacked on the way. And the only one who could help him was an insane greenie.
